The next speaker of the Albert Szent-Györgyi Lecture Series will be Ronald D. Vale, Professor at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology, University of California, San Francisco, on September 10th, 2018, 4 pm, at the Research Centre for Natural Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Science. The title of his talk: Molecular Motor Proteins: Legacy from Albert Szent-Györgyi.
Ron Vale is one of the leading scientist of motor proteins. He was a graduate student when he discovered kinesin in 1985 while studying squid giant axons at the Marine Biology Laboratory in Woods Hole, the same place where Albert Szent-Györgyi worked. He returned to MBL as a postdoctoral fellow and worked as an instructor of the famous summer MBL Physiological Courses. He joined UCSF in 1986 and became an investigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1995. His major research achievements are the description of the force-generating and “walking” mechanism of kinesin along microtubules, the determination of the first atomic resolution of kinesin as well as similar results about the structure and function of the dynein motor proteins. He is an excellent speaker and an science popularizer. He founded iBiology, which is a library of free online talks given by leading research scientists. He is a member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences.
